Wednesday 18 August 2010

We held a four hour flyer on Wednesday afternoon/evening.

7 anglers took part and again, you needed over 20lbs to be up there on the podium.

The weather was good, not too hot or cold with a good breeze blowing for most of the match.

Wheat and sweetcorn proved to be the method once again for all top 3 anglers and the house bank produced 2 of the top 3 places.

Vlado and myself on pegs 4 and 6 respectively with Allan (smiggy) on the wall, peg 8.

Vlado and I fished the pole at about 11 to 13 metres whilst Allan fished the waggler ‘under his feet’ so to speak.

Grass Carp were the main target for the house bank anglers, nice chunky fish ranging, in my case, from 0.5lb to 1.75lb (250 gr to 750 gr) with a few small Carp and Crucians thrown in. allan’s catch was mainly Crucians with the odd larger Carp.

Results:

1st     Paul Mansley     31lb 13oz     (14.43 Kg)

2nd   Allan                      28lb 14oz    (13.1 Kg)

3rd    Vlado                     22lb 1oz      (10 Kg)

Allan did extremely well to achieve 2nd place, then again his weights have steadily increased over the few matches he’s attended proving that you can compete against the pole with just a float rod. Well done Allan.

I have to say that the fishing here is excellent, so long as you keep it simple. There’s no need for expensive baits, a bag of sweetcorn and a bait box full of wheat being all that’s needed for a good day’s fishing.

There are big fish in here, again biggies were hooked and lost by quite a few, if not all participants. It’s only a matter of time before one is landed.

The next match will be held on Sunday 29 August. Draw 0930, fishing 11 to 4. Again, please let me know if you’re attending, it makes life easier if I know how many pegs I need to contend with.

  1. Once again it was a really pleasant day fishing nice weather, lots of fish.
I think Allan did extremely well considering he fished with rod and reel, if he had a whip 4/5m, I believe he would have become 1st.
I drew a flyer but didn’t do the way I should. I had this dilemma fishing at 10m before those few reeds or fish behind them. I thought I could manage to gather the grassies at close range and then hit `em badly but they didn’t think so, unfortunately. Which proved my theory that bigger shoals stay out of the reeds due the regular feeding with wheat by the owners.
Next Wednesday evening I will know how many people will come and will send you SMS

  2. Hi Vlado.

I see from the ‘Fishing-Mania’ forum that some of your guys are interested and are already commenting on the GB v BG element. :)
All I can say to them is, ‘We can all talk the talk. Can you walk the walk?’ :) :) :)
It would be good to get more of your colleagues along here but I may have to do a balancing act in the future.
Most of the Brit anglers are purely pleasure anglers and don’t normally fish in competitions. Hence they don’t have the kit, i.e. poles and seat boxes for example, and only attend because they enjoy a day’s fishing. From what I’ve seen, your guys are mainly match fishermen who know their stuff and attend armed to the teeth.

As for your theory, well, yes I agree that the fish will be near where the owners feed. But I know that on Tuesday evening, the day before the last competition, the guard fed 4 sacks of wheat at about 12 metres in front of the swim you drew, and that particular guard does the same every day he works here. :) So if your theory is true, you had the fish in front of you :) :) :)

    Have fun.

    Slaps.

  3. Hi Paul, that thing with the balance is a very good idea. The first I can think of is a waggler or whip only match at the wall. I said in FM forum that just few of the Brits have got some match gear.
Thanks for reminding me :( :( that the fish was in front , it definitely was but I couldn’t pull them closer, at 10m .
What I should have done is to add a section to my pole after the third hour.
    Cheers!

  4. Feed short, fish long.
    That’s the only hint I’ll give. :)

  5. Alan Smith (smiggy)September 6, 2010 @ 8:34 pm

I could and should have finished a lot closer, but snagged the bottom 3 times in a one hour spell. The line broke at the reel so needed to set up all over again, wasting almost half an hour
Hoping to have some real kit over there for next year to give you BG guys a run for your money

Be back in October for a couple of weeks so will try again with my rod and reel

    Alan

  6. Bring it on, Alan :) :) !
